Located in East Central Georgia, Burke County is about 25 miles south of the metropolitan Augusta area and 100 miles north of Savannah. Surrounding counties include Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins, Richmond and Screven. Burke County has an area of 834 square miles.


The area boasts a pleasant average temperature of 64 degrees. Consequently, Burke County residents enjoy long, warm summers and cool, mild winters. Rainfall averages 44.49 inches annually and snowfall is rarely recorded.


The 2000 census reported that Burke County has a population of 22,243. The City of Waynesboro’s population is 5,813. The city of Sardis has 1,171 residents. Midville 457. Keysville 170. Girard 227.


Road transportation is improving every day. The Burke County portion of the Savannah River Parkway, is now complete and offers easy access to and from the Augusta area. Commercial air travel is available via Bush Field, 25 minutes from Waynesboro, which is served by Delta Airlines, Atlantic Southeast and USAir. Burke County Airport has a lighted runway and is suitable for small, private aircraft and is designed to make it more compatible with today’s aircraft.

Rail service is provided by Norfolk Southern at Waynesboro. Norfolk Southern and CSX piggyback service are available in Savannah. Freight service is provided by interstate and inter/intrastate motor carriers. Continental bus service is provided by Greyhound bus lines.
